Design Brief
A hospital nurse has just visited a patient and needs to give him a medication. The patient has not taken the medication before, but needs to take the medication 4 more times in the next 48 hours. The patient is currently taking 3 other medications. One medication is for a chronic condition, and the other two medications were first given when the patient arrived to the facility.
Research Understanding
I began with a preliminary investigation about
Efficient inpatient management system
Work life management for nurse on duty
Healthcare workforce faces an overload of work, shortage of staff and poor work-life balance. These issues can lead to declining morale and poor well-being, which can further affect decision-making and influence both the patient’s and staff’s satisfaction and experience. This questions the sustainability of the current workflow models.
Healthcare industry is embracing the technology as a form of supporting workers and thus enabling more focus on
Patient-facing activities
Shifting from volume-based to value-based care
How could this be possible and why are doctors so overworked? A lot of technology is already being embraced by the healthcare industry with excellent results, but doctors and nurses are still overworked and under-staffed. A general assumption could be that there are so many people and so few doctors. However, looking at the scenario from a more information-based perspective — a lot of daily (administrative) tasks take a heavy toll on the workflow, which is what Optima Care aims to solve.
“Clinical Staff Need a Supporting Tool to Enhance Daily Workflow through Task Automation and Digitized Care.”

Based on findings from the research phase, I envisioned the app’s prospective ecosystem. It outlines different levels of function along with the stakeholders involved.
Based on findings and ecosystem analysis, we have drafted the challenges for various personas involved directly , indirectly and also the factors that could alleviate the cognitive load on the nurse , staff and enhance the patient experience with respective to the attention given.
Competitive Overview
I began by outlining how Optima care system would work. I referred to existing models used by services like Medisafe , MyTheraphy , Medlist Pro , and Pill Reminder apps
Nurse will log in to the optima care app through the hospital server and this would not function once it crosses the server limitations.
Identify patient through various markings like ward no. , bed no, photo, medical details and profile .
Nurse would be suggesting his/her daily tasks using advanced AI technology
Based on the patient list suggested as per shift timings , nurse could visit each patient with less paper work and effective digital guide to remind/course the patient on medication
Dosage of medication given would be displayed covering various use cases like existing medicines and newly added dosage .
Can input feedback or comments for the next shift nurse to proceed from there
Can maintain and view medical records of patient
Can make actions with respective to the patients ID to order medicines from dispensary , Leave a note to doctor/Nurse head/family.
Can alert heads on patient possible critical conditions (incase of any)through app.
Guideline Principles
Based on the research and competitive understanding , we had defined our digital solution guidelines to have seamless experience and efficient patient care
Create an approachable environment
Streamline the patient tracking process
Maintain transparency and accountability in the network
Data safety & Security
Easy, clear, fast and intuitive user experience without overwhelming information at once
Barrier Analysis
Persona Mapping
To understand the workflow , painpoints and needs much better with respective to the real time user scenarios , I’ve conducted user interviews among my peers & friends working in the health sector across domains.
Information Architecture
Based pain-point insights from the persona , we have envisioned a feature list through which the hierarchy of information has been set using general user behavioral patterns to avoid a learning curve which would in-turn results in the efficiency of app usage. Below is the information architecture for the Optima Care plus App
